April 25: Man of Aran (1934) - Director Robert Flaherty's first sound film is a brilliant dramatized documentary about the Herculean struggles of a community living on the remote island of Aran, off the Irish coast. The island is so barren that the soil has to be collected from rock crevices and mixed with seaweed before crops can be grown. Flaherty also wrote the screenplay. The film was named Best Picture of the Year (1934) by the National Board of Review. This Irish film is Not Rated with a runtime of 77 minutes.
