Sir Thomas Beecham 1879-1961

Sir Thomas Beecham was a famous conductor and impresario who founded the London Philharmonic, and was influential in both British and American classical music.

When rehearsing Handel's Messiah, Beecham said to the choir, "When we sing 'All we, like sheep, have gone astray,' might we please have a little more regret and a little less satisfaction?"

from The Little, Brown Book of Anecdotes, edited by Clifton Fadiman.
